A prayer of longing

December 12, 2022 — Leave a comment

A few weeks ago, I shared this “prayer of longing” during my final message with Heritage Church; I’m eager to see this longing fulfilled.

I long to see a church rise up…

a force unstoppable, empowered by the Spirit of the living God to go into the dark and dangerous places. A people of selfless courage and holy resolve.

who casts off its sin, lays aside its own agendas, releases its pride, and embraces fully the adventurous leadership of Jesus. A church that sets aside its preference and its legalism to be found in the way of selfless grace.

who is so saturated by the presence of Christ and his Holy Spirit that wherever the church goes it is active in pursuing:

  • Good news preached to the poor
  • Broken hearts healed
  • Captives freed
  • Prisoners released from darkness
  • and the very favor of God declared and experienced.

who refuses to settle for what is easy to measure, neat-and-tidy to accomplish, and risk-free… and instead pursues transformation at the cost of comfort, Kingdom at the expense of self, and fresh imagination at the sacrifice of what is known.

who is scripture-soaked, Jesus-anchored, and Spirit-enlivened. That doesn’t just welcome the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and the marginalized but goes to them and sits with them.

where the living Jesus is so present that whenever this church gathers, bodies are healed, relationships are restored, the dead are raised, and what was impossible becomes possible.

I long to see a church rise up.

Columbus Day

As holidays go, Columbus Day has often felt like a strange celebration. For me, though, Columbus Day has become something of an annual reminder of this truth:

We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps (Proverbs 16:9, NLT).

Whether you think of columbus as hero, villain, or some hybrid of the two, the story of his journey and ‘discovery’ seems like a great reminder of how we can plan a course and destination for ourselves…only to find other circumstances being used to bring us to an unanticipated new world of possibility and adventure–something far different than we may have initially imagined.

My prayer for my family and for the teams I get to be part of is that we would be found trusting the Holy Spirit to determine our steps; that we would look upon life’s unexpected detours as divine opportunities for adventure which just might redefine the way we see the world and our place in it.

Fear is one of those things that can keep us ’stuck’—hindering us from knowing the life of fullness and adventure we yearn for and found in Jesus. In two previous posts, we’ve looked at the reality that decisions made from a posture of fear are seldom great, and examined some of the symptoms of living from a place of fear. What can we do to live more in the freedom of joy and purpose God has for us rather than the prison of fear?

In my own life, I’ve found the following to help in avoiding leading or living from fear: Continue Reading…

Decisions made from a place of fear are seldom the best for us or those we love. But something happens when we’re afraid–we feel a sense of urgency that can lead us down a nasty path; fear can quickly position us to act without fully formed thought, blinded to the fact that fear-founded decisions are rarely best. There’s a story in Scripture which seems to illustrate this pretty well:  Continue Reading…

There are many times when I wonder just what to do. There are options, opportunities, moments to be capitalized upon…and not an obvious right way to go. Is there a way to know what to do? Every time we say ‘yes’ to one thing, we’re saying ‘no’ to something else, just by way of limiting our availability… and trying to determine what is the most prudent or urgent/important or furthest-reaching investment can be so overwhelming it’s almost paralyzing.

There’s a story in Scripture that speaks into a moment of ‘where do I go from here?’ and I have found it incredibly helpful: God has identified and called out a man named Saul to be the first king of the people of Israel. Saul had no idea what it means to be king; the best he has is what can be observed of the other kings in the Ancient Near East…and I think it’s safe to say that in many ways these weren’t the best role models.

God has been using a man named Samuel to communicate this kingly call to Saul. This involves certain signs that God is, in fact, positioning Saul as king. In the midst of this communication, a particular verse stands out to me:

Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you. ~ 1 Samuel 10:7

What a relief it must have been to hear this for Saul. And I think the same relief is available to us–once we have been commissioned and enabled by God, there is a real sense that —presuming continued connection with Him—we are free to tackle what’s in front of us. This is a great reminder to stay connected…and to stay active in doing what’s placed before us.

Are you following Jesus and living in obedience to Him? If that’s the case and you’re struggling with knowing what to do ‘next,’ my suggestion is to heed the word above and “do whatever your hand finds to do.” After all, God is with you.
